Herbicide-resistant foxtail millet cultivar ‘Jigu 39’ and its simplified cultivation techniques

‘Jigu 39’, a foxtail millet cultivar, was registered by the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture in 2018. It includes two lines: herbicide-resistant line and herbicide-sensitive sib line. By spraying herbicides at the seedling stage, chemical thinning seedlings and weed control in ‘Jigu 39’ fields can be achieved. The grain of ‘Jigu 39’ has large size, golden yellow color and high quality. The cultivar has merits including friendly mechanized planting, high and stable yield and good lodging resistance. From 2018 to 2020, ‘Jigu 39’ has been listed as the leading millet variety by Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of Hebei Province. Since 2019, ‘Jigu 39’ became the variety with the largest popularized area in Hebei Province, as the variety with the largest popularized area in the country among other varieties bred during the 13th Five-Year Plan period.
