Recently, due to the extreme weather of hail and high winds, crops in some parts of Baoding City have been seriously affected. On June 15th , researcher WANG Wenqiao, HAN Xiuying, ZHAO Jianjiang and WU Jie from Institute of Plant Protection went to Wangdu County and Qingyuan Distinct of Baoding to provide technical guidance on post-disaster field management and prevention and control of disease and pest of pepper and watermelon.

At present, it is the watermelon and wheat harvest season. Farmers have suffered heavy losses. At Qingyuan Distinct, in view of the open-field watermelon that suffered the most damage from the disaster, experts suggested farmers sell watermelons that still have a certain commodity value and contact insurance companies for claims as soon as possible. It was suggested that watermelon farmers should plant early maturing varieties, change open-field cultivation to facility cultivation or set up anti-hail nets in advance in the coming year. In order to reduce losses, experts recommended that farmers replant high-yield cash crops such as tomatoes and eggplants as quickly as possible.

At Wangdu County, according to the current problems of severe occurrence of pepper phytophthora blight and soft rot disease, experts suggested farmers apply high-ridge cultivation, drain the water and remove the disease residues in the field timely. Before the onset and at the early stage of the disease, it was suggested that kasugamycin and Zn thiazole be sprayed timely after rain to prevent and control soft rot disease, dimethomorph and fluopicolide to be sprayed to prevent and control phytophthora blight.

This kind of activities has great significance for carrying out research and guidance on post-disaster agricultural production and scientific prevention and control of diseases and pests.
