Saline-alkali land is an important source of cultivated land for improving quality, expanding capacity and increasing efficiency. Carrying out comprehensive utilization of saline-alkali land is of great strategic significance for ensuring national food security and securing China's rice bowl. In recent years, with the reputation of "dry alkali wheat" in Hebei Province gaining popularity, the production of dry alkali wheat in Hebei has entered a period of vigorous development, accompanied by the demand for summer production models after the harvest of dry alkali wheat, that is, how to choose the succession mode after the harvest of dry alkali wheat. Grain crops such as millet and sorghum have advantages such as drought resistance, waterlogging resistance, salt alkali resistance, barren tolerance, and short growth period. Sorghum is a typical suitable crop for saline alkali dry land. Cangzhou City is a hub for sorghum trade and processing, as well as a traditional sorghum production area. Utilizing sorghum and other miscellaneous grain crops to replace dry alkali wheat production can help tap into the comprehensive production potential of grain in saline alkali land.
In order to help improve the comprehensive productivity of saline-alkali land in Hebei, HAAFS’s millet relies on its disciplinary advantages and actively collaborates with the drought alkali wheat team of Cangzhou Academy of Agricultural Sciences to develop a new high-yield and income increasing model suitable for saline-alkali land in eastern Hebei. This model adopts new varieties of sorghum and millet that are high yield, stress resistant, and have a matching growth period, and is equipped with green and efficient fertilization production technology. In 2023, we will carry out research on drought alkali wheat+summer sorghum, drought alkali wheat+summer millet production models. The economic benefits of these production models of dry alkali wheat and summer corn were evaluated.
Compared with the traditional production model of dry alkali wheat+summer corn, the dry alkali wheat+summer sorghum or summer millet model selects sorghum millet varieties with strong salt and alkali tolerance and high yield, such as “Jiniang 4” and “Jigu 39”. Based on crop differences and saline-alkali soil characteristics, the fertilization technology for dry alkali wheat, sorghum, and millet is optimized, and a new type of saline-alkali soil efficiency enhancing biological compound enzyme fertilizer is added. Through small plot experiments and 100 mu verification, The new model of dry alkali wheat+summer sorghum has a net profit of over 800 yuan per mu, while the new model of dry alkali wheat+summer millet has a net profit of over 850 yuan per mu, which is an increase of over 350 yuan per mu compared to the traditional production model of dry alkali wheat+summer corn at 417.5 yuan. After practice and proof, compared with traditional production models, the new model of dry alkali wheat+summer sorghum or summer millet has advantages in crop rotation, yield increase and income increase. It has positive significance in unlocking the harvest code of saline-alkali land and enriching the planting structure, exploring a new way for efficient utilization of saline alkali land.
