On December 19, 2023, LIU Xiaodong, the deputy director and researcher DONG Lingdi from the Institute of Cash Crops of Hebei Academy of Agriculture and Forestry Sciences, visited the Huanxiang Family Farm in Youzhao Township and a base in Xunzhao Township to investigate the impact of heavy snow on production, and provided guidance on the post snow production of greenhouse vegetables and outdoor wheat-pepper intercropping.
The Huanxiang Family Farm is currently vigorously developing greenhouse tomato, watermelon, leafy vegetables, and bean production in winter and spring. It owns more than 30 plastic greenhouses covered with insulation covers, covering an area of nearly 200 acres. A 6.67-hectare outdoor experiment field was selected to demonstrate the wheat-pepper intercropping cultivation model of the Institute of Cash Crops. The winter plastic greenhouse group in Xunzhao Township base mainly focuses on cultivating high-end vegetable products. Currently, the main leafy vegetables produced in the field include celery, spinach, rapeseed, etc.
The two experts provided guidance on the post snow management of greenhouses, pointing out technical measures such as removing snow accumulation on greenhouses in a timely manner, gradually ventilating and reducing humidity inside the greenhouses, and using fumigant to prevent outbreaks of diseases such as downy mildew and gray mold. Experts checked the emergence of wheat seedlings in the wheat-pepper experimental demonstration planting area, and found that the wheat seedlings were in good condition and not affected by snow and freezing. In Xunzhao Township base, comparing with the control group, the adoption of the under film drip irrigation celery cultivation technology from the Institute of Cash Crops resulted in lower humidity, fewer diseased yellow leaves, and more vigorous growth in the greenhouses, which was fully affirmed by the base manager.
