From June 19 to 20, 2024, the peach green prevention and control team of the Institute of Plant Protection carried out comprehensive green prevention and control work of redneck longhorned beetle (Aromia bungii) in Shunping peach production demonstration base.

The larvae of the redneck longhorned beetle harm the trunks of trees such as peaches, apricots, plums, and cherries, causing a decrease of fruit yield, weakened tree vigor, and in severe cases, plant death. The larval stage of this insect is long, and the affected part of tree is hidden, making it difficult to control. It occurs very seriously in the aging peach orchards of Shunping and the main peach production area in Hebei, and has a tendency to harm young trees, becoming an important pest that affects the development of the peach industry.

In recent years, the peach green prevention and control team of the Institute of Plant Protection has gathered advantageous resources from the Natural Enemy Insect Research Laboratory, Microbial Insecticide Research Laboratory, Agricultural Nematode Research Laboratory, and Insect Chemical Ecology Research Laboratory. Starting from monitoring the occurrence and growth patterns of the redneck longhorned beetle, the team has taken various prevention and control measures in different developmental stages of the beetle, such as tree trunk whitening, binding and covering with nets, infecting larvae with nematode and Beauveria bassiana, infecting adults with Metarhizium, attracting adults with sugar and vinegar solution, and release of parasitic natural enemies(such as the Dastarcus helophoroides(Fairmaire)and the Scleroderma guani Xiao et Wu), achieving excellent results.

According to the monitoring results, the period from late June to early August is the key period for adult pest control. The expert team has carried out a series of prevention and control work based on the occurrence of pests in the base, in order to timely prevent and control the damage of the redneck longhorned beetle to the Shunping peach production area, and provide technical support for the green and sustainable development of the local peach industry.
