On-site observation and variety tasting of fresh corn held by the Institute of Cereal and Oil Crops

Autumn is gradually strengthening, we will usher in another heavy harvest season. In order to fully showcase the research achievements of the Institute of Cereal and Oil Crops on fresh corn and effectively promote the industrialization of fresh corn in Hebei Province, on September 11th, the Institute successfully held a live observation and variety tasting event for fresh corn.

The experts first visited the new variety demonstration base located in Fujia Village, Zhengding County, where more than 300 acres of demonstration fields, including the new varieties “Jinuo 181” and “Jinuo 182”, were growing well. The base adopts early spring sowing and late summer sowing, the efficient production modes such as subsurface drip irrigation, integrated water and fertilizer, wide and narrow row cultivation, organic fertilizer replacing chemical fertilizers, and comprehensive prevention and control of pests, diseases, and weeds are used in the base, achieving efficient green planting of fresh corn twice a year. The attending experts observed and tasted the steaming and cooking quality of 41 new varieties on site. Based on the characteristics of fresh corn such as odor, color, stickiness, sweetness, crispness, and skin residue rate, combined with the field growth of the varieties, a comprehensive evaluation was conducted. Through anonymous voting, three excellent new varieties with the greatest promotion potential were selected: Jinan Nuo 175, Jinan Nuo 2201, and Jinan Sweet 3202.

Vice President WANF Qi summarized that the research on fresh corn conducted by the Institute has a relatively short period of time, and the social impact has not yet formed. However, the development momentum is relatively rapid. The “Ji Nuo” series of fresh corn varieties currently cultivated have a soft and glutinous taste, outstanding flavor, and increasing consumer recognition and market share year by year. It has become one of the key directions for building the "Academy Brand" of Hebei Academy of Agriculture and Forestry Sciences.
